Gear Function. Mechanical Fault.

Fault symptoms

CHECK GEARBOX warning lamp on.

TCM in Limp-Home mode.

Slippage in the transmission.

Conditions

The difference between input shaft speed and output shaft speed (speed of the car) is more than 10% above the gear ratio for more than 5 seconds.

Diagnosis will not be performed if:

1. TCM is in Limp-Home mode.

2. Car speed is below 25 km/h.

3. The selector lever is in P, R or N.

4. The accelerator position is less than 10%.

5. The fluid temperature is lower than 20°C.

6. Less than 10 seconds has elapsed since shifting occurred.

7. Engine speed is below 400 rpm.

8. DTC 1817 or 1822 has been generated.

Diagnostic help

The control module calculates the ratio between input and output shaft speed. For each gear there is a definite relationship, depending on the ratio. The fault indicates a mechanical malfunction. Wear in the transmission may be the cause of abrupt shifting and an inoperative Lock-up function.

Diagnostic procedure

1 Check the fault symptom

Check the problem by driving the car following the test drive schedule, see Test drive schedule . Note any fault symptoms.

Are there any fault symptoms?

Yes

Continue with Mechanic and hydraulic faults and then with step 2.

no

Continue with step 2.

2 Final check

- Clear all diagnostic trouble codes in the system.

- Perform a driving cycle:

Drive the car at varying loads and engine speeds for 5 minutes.

- Evaluate the driving cycle:

Make sure the trouble code has not recurred.

Has the trouble code recurred?

Yes

Continue with Diagnostic procedure before replacing control module

no

The steps taken to rectify the fault were correct.
