Steering gear, B207, 4WD, RHD

Important

Scrupulous cleanliness must always be observed during all work with hydraulic components.


Important

Always use wing covers when working in the engine bay.


To remove


1. Clamp the return hose using 30 07 739 Hose pinch-off pliers .

2. Remove the return hose bracket (A) from the steering gear.


3. Set the wheels and steering wheel in the straight ahead position. Lock the steering wheel with the steering wheel lock.

4. Raise the car.

5. Remove the front wheels.

6. Remove the Bumper shell, front .

7. Fit the nut (A) holding the track rod ends to the steering swivel members on both sides. Remove the track rods using 87 91 287 Puller, 150 mm .


8. Remove the anti-roll bar links (B) from the anti-roll bar. Hold with a thin 17 mm open wrench so that the ball joint does not turn.

9. Suspend the radiator assembly from the radiator member with two 83 95 212 Straps .


10. Remove the Propeller shaft .

11. Remove the screw (A) holding the front torque arm to the subframe.


12. Remove the bolts (B) holding the rear torque rod bracket to the subframe.


13. Remove the steering shaft joint (A) from the steering gear.


14. Cars with Xenon lights: Remove the clip (A) for the level sensor's wiring harness.


15. Position 83 95 311 Trolley lift with 83 94 801 Parent fixture and 83 96 137 Centring tool, subframe - body .


16. Remove the front part of the wing liner (A) and bend it out of the way.


17. Remove the subframe bolts (B) on both sides. Detach the stays (C) from the body.

18. Lower the subframe approx. 100 mm (4 in).

19. Remove the anti-roll bar mountings (A) from the subframe.


20. Remove the heat shield (A).


21. Position a receptacle under the car. Remove the return line (B) and delivery line (C) from the steering gear and plug the connections.

22. Remove the delivery line from the clips (A) on the subframe.


23. Remove the steering gear (A) from the subframe.


24. Raise the anti-roll bar as high as possible and lift out the steering gear through the wheel housing on the right-hand side.


To fit


1. Lift the steering gear into place through the wheel housing on the right-hand side.

2. Fit the steering gear (A) to the subframe.

Tightening torque 50 Nm +60° (37 lbf ft +60°)


3. Fit the delivery line in the clamps (A) on the subframe.


Important

Make sure that the delivery line is fitted in the lower connection and the return line in the upper connection. The steering gear will be destroyed if the lines are mixed up!


4. Fit the delivery line (C) and return line (B) to the steering gear. The return line must be routed above the steering gear and under the rear torque rod. Use new O-rings.

Tightening torque: 32 Nm (24 lbf ft)


5. Fit the heat shield (A).

6. Wipe clean any spilled oil from the subframe.

7. Fit the anti-roll bar (A) to the subframe. Threadlock, Loctite 242 on the threads.

Tightening torque: 18 Nm (14 lbf ft)


8. Raise the subframe and fit 83 96 137 Centring tool, subframe - body against the guide holes in the body. Fit the stays (C) and tighten the bolts (B).

Tightening torque, subframe: 75 Nm +135° (55 lbf ft +135°)

Tightening torque, rod: 90 Nm +45° (67 lbf ft +45°)


9. Lower and pull away the trolley lift. Fit the front parts (A) of the wheel arch liners.

10. Cars with Xenon lights: Fit the clip for the level sensor's wiring harness.


11. Fit the steering shaft joint (A) to the steering gear. Clean the threads and apply Threadlock, Loctite 242 to the threads.

Tightening torque 30 Nm (22 lbf ft)


12. Remove the straps.

13. Fit the front torque rod's bolt (A).

Tightening torque 60 Nm +90° (50 lbf ft +90°)


14. Fit the bolts (B) to the rear torque rod's bracket.

Tightening torque, M10: 65 Nm (48 lbf ft)

Tightening torque, M12: 120 Nm (88 lbf ft)


15. Fit the anti-roll bar links (B) to the anti-roll bar. Hold with a thin 17 mm open wrench so that the ball joint does not turn.

Tightening torque 64 Nm (47 lbf ft)


16. Fit the track rod ends (A) to the steering swivel members.

Tightening torque 35 Nm (26 lbf ft)

Warning

Check that the bolt fits into the groove on the pinion shaft.


17. Fit the Propeller shaft

18. Fit the Bumper shell, front .

19. Fit the Wheels .

20. Lower the car to the floor.

21. Remove the hose pinch-off pliers.

22. Fit the return hose bracket (A) to the steering gear.


23. Top up with power steering fluid and bleed the power steering system, see Bleeding the power steering system . Check the sealing integrity.

24. Carry out Wheel alignment .
