The transmission control module primarily controls

The control module has a 45-pin connector and is located behind the glove box in the passenger area. It is programmed for either engine types B205E, B235E or B308E and must only be used in Saab 9-5 together with the engine type in question. The control module receives information from a number of its own sensors as well as from other electronic systems. The information is processed and the control module controls the engaged gear and shifting point based on the selected driving program (NORMAL or WINTER).

Shifting is achieved by the control module affecting the two solenoid valves S1 and S2. The control module also determines when the torque converter Lock-up is to be activated, which is achieved with the solenoid valve SL. The transmission system pressure is controlled by TCM.

The control module is supplied with current (+30 circuit) continuously and designed to operate on a power supply of between 9 and 16 V when the car is being driven. Stored diagnost ic trouble codes are not cleared from the memory if the power supply fails.

When the ignition switch is turned to the ON position, the control module is activated and turns on the CHECK GEARBOX lamp as a function check. If no faults are found, TCM will turn off the lamp after three seconds.

In the event of a fault in any of the inputs/outputs, the transmission goes into Limp-Home mode. All control module functions will then be disengaged or an emergency operation program will be activated. The car can then be driven but with limited shifting capability.

When handling control modules, it is important to ground yourself first by touching the car's engine, for instance. Avoid touching the control module's connecting pins.

Diagnostics

If the control module's ROM program memory or RAM working memory is defective, diagnostic trouble code P0605 will be generated.
