Power flow, 1st gear

Power flow, 1st gear

Selector lever in D, 3 or 2

The input shaft rotates clockwise and is connected to the rear planetary gear train's (P1) ring gear by clutch C1. The result is that the input shaft and the rear planetary gear train's ring gear rotate clockwise at the same speed.

The inner planet gear in P1 rotates clockwise (the sun wheel rotates anticlockwise).

Freewheel F2 prevents the front planetary gear train's ring gear from rotating anticlockwise.

The outer planet gear in P2 rotates anticlockwise at the same time as it moves clockwise on the inside of the ring gear.

The planet carrier and the driving intermediate gear rotate clockwise as a unit at a lower speed than the input shaft.

Since the driving intermediate gear rotates clockwise, the driven intermediate gear and the lower planetary gear train's (P3) ring gear rotate anticlockwise at the same speed.

The lower planetary gear train's planet gear rotates anticlockwise. Brake B4 and freewheel F3 prevent the lower planetary gear train's sun wheel from rotating.

The lower planetary gear train's planet gear moves clockwise round the sun wheel while rotating at the same time. The lower planet carrier and the final drive pinion rotate anticlockwise as a unit at a lower speed than the driven intermediate gear.

Selector lever in position 1

The power flow with the selector lever in position 1 is largely the same as when the selector lever is in position D, 3 or 2.

The difference is that engine braking is obtained by brake B3 preventing the front planetary gear train's (P2) ring gear from rotating in any direction. With the selector lever in position D, 3 or 2, freewheel F2 allows the ring gear (P2) to rotate freely in a clockwise direction.
