Fuel filter, fuel heater, 4-cyl

Warning

Removal of the fuel filter involves partial dismantling of the car's fuel system. The following points must therefore be observed in connection with this work:

Work only in a well-ventilated area! If approved equipment for the extraction of fuel vapours is available, be sure to use it.

Wear suitable gloves! Prolonged contact with fuel can cause skin irritation or dermatitis.

Keep a class BE fire extinguisher near at hand! Be mindful of the danger of sparks caused by short circuits and when connecting and disconnecting leads in electrical circuits.

No smoking anywhere in the vicinity.

Important

Be particulary observant regardning cleanliness when working on the fuel system. Loss of function may occur due to very small particles. Prevent dirt and grime from entering the fuel system by cleaning the connections and plugging pipes and lines during disassembly. Use 82 92 948 Plugs, A/C system assembly. Keep components free from contaminants during storage.

To remove

1. Raise the car.

2. Loosen the filter holder from its mounting using a drift, the handle of a hammer or the like.

3. Detach the connector for filter preheating and carefully take down the filter holder.

4. Carefully clamp the soft portion of the fuel hoses with 30 07 739 Hose clamp pliers .

5. Place a receptacle under the filter. Slightly loosen the centre bolt on the filter cover, open the drain plug and drain the filter.

6. Remove the centre bolt completely and remove the holder with filter insert.

7. Remove the filter insert from the holder.

If the filter insert is extremely dirty, the tank and its fuel may contain impurities. The tank must then be removed for cleaning. Fuel lines up to the injection pump must also be cleaned.

To fit

1. Check that the filter holder is clean and fit the filter insert in the holder with new seals in the cover and centre bolt. If necessary, replace the O-ring to the drain plug and tighten.

2. Fit the holder to the cover and tighten the centre bolt.

3. Remove the hose clamp pliers, plug in the preheating connector and fit the filter holder to its mounting on the tank. Check that it sits correctly in its mounting.

4. Check and, if necessary, adjust the fuel hoses so that they are not pinched or chafed.

5. Lower the car to the floor.

6. Bleed the fuel system. See Bleeding fuel line, 4-cyl .
