Circuit/System Description

A throttle plate actuator is used to achieve high exhaust gas recirculation rates. It increases the pressure difference between exhaust and intake so that the appropriate exhaust quantity can be mixed with the intake air. The engine control module (ECM) transmits the desired angle as a PWM signal to the throttle plate actuator. The throttle plate actuator activates the DC motor so that the throttle shall be controlled in proportion to the PWW signal from the ECM. The position of the throttle is monitored by an internal position sensor.

Conditions for Running the DTC

The ignition is ON or the engine is running.

The throttle actuator motor is commanded ON or OFF.

The ignition voltage is less than 16 V.

The DTCs run continuously when the above conditions are met.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The ECM detects an open, short to ground, or a short to voltage on the throttle actuator control circuit for greater than 1 s.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

DTCs P2100, P2102 and P2103 are Type A DTCs.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTCs P2100, P2102 and P2103 are Type A DTCs.

Circuit/System Verification

1. Ignition ON, command the Q38 Throttle Body ON and OFF with a scan tool. The throttle plate should respond to the scan tool commands.

2. Read the DTC information from the scan tool. DTC P2100, P2101, P2102 or P2103 should not be shown.

3. Operate the vehicle within the conditions for running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data.

Circuit/System Testing

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the Q38 Throttle Body.

2. Ignition ON, connect a test lamp between control circuit terminal 2 and ground. The test lamp should turn ON.

3. If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuits test normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

4. Ignition ON, connect a test lamp between control circuit terminal 6 and ground. The test lamp should turn ON.

5. If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuits test normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

6. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector X1 at the K20 Engine Control Module.

7. Ignition ON, connect a test lamp between control circuit terminal 6 and ground. The test lamp should not illuminate.

8. If the test lamp illuminate, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuits test normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

9. Ignition ON, connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal 2 and ground. The test lamp should not illuminate.

10. If the test lamp illuminate, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuits test normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.

11. If all circuits test normal, replace the Q38 Throttle Body.
