Diagnostic trouble code generation, diagnostic trouble code/fault counter
|
Besides fault status, the control module fault handling procedure includes a fault counter for certain diagnostic trouble codes. Among others, this applies to DTCs that turn on the CHECK GEARBOX indicator lamp. When the control module fault handling procedure determines that there is a fault during the driving cycle, the fault counter will be set to 40 and the CHECK ENGINE and CHECK GEARBOX indicator lamps will go on. If the fault is self-rectifying, i.e. the control module determines that there is no fault present during the following driving cycles, the fault counter will be decreased by 1 for each driving cycle. A driving cycle starts when the ignition key is turned to the ON position and is completed when the ignition key is turned to the OFF position. When the fault counter reaches 37, the CHECK ENGINE and CHECK GEARBOX indicator lamps will go out but the DTC is still stored in memory. When the fault counter has reached 0, the DTC will be cleared. DTCs without fault counter will remain stored in memory until zeroed, with the diagnostic tool command "CLEAR DTC" for instance.
