Electric detonator 2, open circuit

Cars with passenger airbag

1. Make a note of the diagnostic trouble code and then clear it. Switch the ignition off and on again, wait for at least 40 seconds with the ignition switched on.

Check whether the diagnostic trouble code recurs. If it does, the fault is permanent. Proceed to point 2.

If it does not, the fault is intermittent.

Leave the ignition switched on and jiggle the connectors and wiring to check for an open circuit/loose contact. Note whether the SRS lamp starts to flash again. If it does, check to see whether the diagnostic trouble code has recurred.

2. Remove the glove box and unplug the connector on the underside of the passenger airbag. Unscrew the steering wheel airbag, connect reference resistor 84 71 153 to both airbag connectors.

Switch on the ignition and clear the diagnostic trouble code. Switch the ignition off and on again, wait for at least 40 seconds and then check to see whether the diagnostic trouble code recurs.

If the diagnositc trouble code recurs, proceed to point 3.

If the diagnostic trouble code has gone, the fault is in the passenger airbag. Switch off the ignition and carry out a double check by connecting the airbag, switch on the ignition, wait for at least 40 seconds and then check to see whether the diagnostic trouble code recurs.

Check to see if the diagnostic trouble code returns.

3. Switch off the ignition and unplug the connector at the control module. Check pins 6 and 8 for open circuit/contact pin slide-out.

Close the connector, switch on the ignition and clear the diagnostic trouble code. Switch off the ignition and switch it on again, wait for at least 40 seconds and then check to see whether the diagnostic trouble code recurs.

If the diagnostic trouble code has gone, the connector was at fault.

If the diagnostic trouble code recurs, check the wiring by connecting a BOB to the control module's connector and taking a resistance reading across pins 6 and 8.

If the resistance is high, investigate the cause and change the wiring.

If the resistance is 2-3 ohms, plug in the connector, switch on the ignition and clear the diagnostic trouble code. Switch the ignition off and then on again. Wait for at least 40 seconds before checking to see whether the diagnostic trouble code recurs.

Important

Check that no other diagnostic trouble codes are generated. The diagnostic trouble code for open circuit can prevent the control module from continuing diagnosis on the detonator circuits.

If the diagnostic trouble code for an open circuit recurs, proceed to .
