Joint behind MacPherson strut

This description refers to joining the wheel housing behind the strut tower. Replacing frame member, see Section of front frame member and Front wheel housing and front frame member (complete replacement).


1. Position the car in an aligning bench.

2. Remove the front wing.

3. Cross-measure if necessary.

4. Remove the reinforcement member on the outside of the wheel housing. It can be refitted if undamaged.


5. Drill out the spot-welds and tap loose the damaged section of the wheel housing.


6. Align any deformed sheet metal or panels.

7. Fit the new section of the wheel housing with a few welding clamps.

8. Align the exact position using the aligning bench measuring system.

9. Fit the front wing and bonnet, check the fit of the wheel housing.

10. Check where on the wheel housing it is possible to reach with the welding point. Mark locations where holes should be drilled for plug-welding.

11. Remove the wheel housing and drill holes for plug-welding.

12. Grind the surfaces on the wheel housing and body that are to be welded.

13. Apply welding primer on the surfaces to be plug and spot-welded. Use Teroson Zinkspray.

14. Fit the wheel housing with a few welding clamps. Align the exact position using the aligning bench measuring system.

15. Fit the front wing and bonnet, check the fit.

16. Remove the front wing and the bonnet.

17. Spot and plug-weld the housing into place.


18. Grind the welds.

19. Grind clean the surfaces on the outside of the wheel housing where the reinforcement is to be welded on.

20. Grind clean the surfaces on the reinforcement that are to be welded.

21. Fit the reinforcement and weld it into place.


22. Grind the welds with Scotch-Brite to remove the welding residue.

23. Remove any remaining welding primer. Welding primer reduces adhesion of paint, filler and sealant.

24. Apply primer to all ground surfaces. Use Standox 1K Primer.

25. Seal joints and sheet metal flanges with sealant. Use Terostat 1K-PUR.

26. Apply underbody sealant to the underbody and inside the wheel housing. Use Terostat 9320.

27. Paint the wheel housing and edges of the wing.

28. Apply anti-corrosion agent to the wheel housing after painting. Use Terotex HV 400 or Mercasol 1.
