Section of front frame member

Section of front frame member

This description refers to joining the frame member. For replacement of wheel housing, see Section of front wheel housing , Section of wheel housing or Front wheel housing and front frame member .

Important

The frame member must not be joined further back than what is indicated on the illustration in order not to damage the reinforcement inside the frame member.

1. Position the car in an aligning bench.

2. Remove the front wing.

3. Remove the radiator member, see Section of radiator member .

4. Cross-measure if necessary.

5. Cut loose the damaged section of the frame member.

6. Align any deformed sheet metal or panels.

7. Cut the new frame member.

8. Fit the spare part. Use the holes in the frame member to measure in the spare part. Adjust its exact position using the aligning bench measuring system and then fixate with a couple of welding clamps.

9. Cut the existing frame member exactly at the spare part rear edge.

10. Remove the spare part and align any deformed sheet metal or panel.

11. Grind clean the surfaces on the spare part and body to be welded.

12. Fit the spare part and fixate with a couple of welding clamps.

13. Fit the spare part in the exact position using the aligning bench measuring system.

14. Fit the wheel housing and the front cross-member with a couple of welding clamps. Adjust the exact position using the aligning bench measuring system.

15. Fit the front wing, bonnet and radiator member, check the fit of the spare part.

16. Fasten the crossmember and frame member with a couple of welds.

17. Remove the front wing, bonnet wheel housing and radiator member. All-weld the joint on the frame member.

Note

If the wheel housing is in place:

Cut an opening in the wheel housing and all-weld the inside of the reinforcement. Weld together the opening.

18. Grind the weld.

19. Apply primer to all ground surfaces. Use high-quality primer, for example, Standox 1K Fullprimer.

20. Seal the joints and sheet metal flanges with sealant. Use Terostat 1K-PUR, part no. 30 15 426.

21. Apply underbody sealant to the underbody and inside the wheel housing. Use Terostat 9320.

22. Apply anti-corrosion agent to the interior of the frame member after painting. Use Terotex HV 400 or Mercasol 1.

23. Fit the radiator crossmember and front wing.
