Piston rings, removing and fitting

To remove

1. Remove the piston with the connecting rod - see Piston with connecting rod, removing and fitting .

2. Remove the piston rings with piston ring pliers (1).

Piston ring grooves - use the ground side of an old piston ring.

3. Check the piston ring gap with a feeler gauge, put the piston ring into the narrowest part of the cylinder bore.

Permitted play:
Square ring (2): 0.30 to 0.50 mm
Minute ring (3): 0.30 to 0.50 mm
Oil scraper ring (4): 0.40 to 1.40 mm

4. Check the vertical play of the piston ring in the piston ring groove with a feeler gauge.

Permitted vertical play:
Square ring (1): see technical data Cylinders, pistons
Minute ring (2): see technical data Cylinders, pistons
Oil scraper ring (3): see technical data Cylinders, pistons

To fit

1. Fit the piston rings with "TOP" face up onto the pistons with piston ring pliers.

2. Piston ring positions - piston rings (I) (square ring and minute ring) offset 180°. Oil scraper rings (II) - offset 25 to 50 mm to the left and right of the middle ring gap respectively.

3. Fit the piston together with the connecting rod - see Piston with connecting rod, removing and fitting .
