Circuit Description |
The intake air temperature (IAT) sensor is an integral part of the Intake Manifold Pressure and Air Temperature sensor. The IAT sensor is a variable resistor that measures the temperature of the intake air. The engine control module (ECM) supplies 5 V to the IAT signal circuit and supplies a ground to the low reference circuit.
The following table illustrates the difference between temperature, resistance, and voltage:
IAT | IAT Resistance | IAT Signal Voltage |
Cold | High | High |
Warm | Low | Low |

Conditions for Setting the DTC |
P0111
• |
The ECM detects that the IAT remains steady within 2°C (4°F) during the idle test.
|
• |
The ECM detects that the IAT decreased less than 2°C (4°F) during the cruise test.
|
• |
Any of the above conditions exists for greater than a cumulative of 45 s for the cruse test or 55 s for the idle test.
|
• |
The ECM detects that the difference between the IAT and the ECT less than -20°C (-36°F) OR more than 35°C (63°F).
|
• |
The above condition exists for greater than 2 s.
|
P0112
The ECM detects that the intake air temperature is warmer than 132°C (270°F) for greater than 4 s or a cumulative of 30 s.P0113
The ECM detects that the intake air temperature is colder than -42°C (-43.6°F) and remains steady within 3°C (5°F) during a cumulative air flow of greater than 999 grams. The scan tool is limited to -40 °C (-40 °F), so the diagnostic procedure uses -39 °C (-38 °F) to determine if there is an IAT condition. The condition exists for greater than 4 s or a cumulative of 30 s.P0114
The ECM detects that the IAT sensor signal is intermittent or has abruptly changed for period of time greater than 5 s.Action Taken When the DTC Sets |
DTCs P0111, P0112, P0113, and P0114 are Type B DTCs.
Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC |
DTCs P0111, P0112, P0113, and P0114 are Type B DTCs.
Diagnostic Aids |
• |
If the vehicle has sat overnight, the IAT sensor and the ECT sensor values should be within 3°C (5°F).
|
• |
High resistance on the IAT sensor signal circuit could set a DTC.

Circuit/System Verification |
1. |
Allow the engine to idle. DTCs P0111, P0112, P0113, or P0114 should not activated.
|
2. |
Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data.
|
Circuit/System Testing |
1. |
Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the B65 Intake Manifold Pressure and Air Temperature sensor.
|
2. |
Remove the fuse that supplies B+ to terminal 56 X2 of the ECM.
|
3. |
Ignition OFF and all vehicle systems OFF. It may take up to 2 minutes for all vehicle systems to power down. Test for less than 5 Ω between the low reference circuit terminal 1 and ground. |
4. |
If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance, or for a short to voltage. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the K20 ECM.
|
5. |
Install fuse that supplies B+ to terminal 56 X2 of the ECM.
|
6. |
Ignition ON, test for 4.8-5.2 V between the 5 V reference circuit terminal 3 and ground
|
7. |
If less than the specified range, test the 5 V reference circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 ECM.
|
8. |
If greater than the specified range, test the 5 V reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 ECM.
|
9. |
Ignition ON, verify that the scan tool IAT sensor parameter is colder than -39°C (-38°F).
|
10. |
If warmer than the specified range, test the signal circuit's pin 2 for a short to ground. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the K20 ECM.
|
11. |
Ignition ON, install a 3 A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal 2 and ground. Verify the IAT sensor parameter is warmer than 128°C (263°F). |
12. |
