Transmission Control Lever Malfunction

Transmission Control Lever Malfunction

Diagnostic Instructions

Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle prior to using this diagnostic procedure.

Review Strategy Based Diagnosis for an overview of the diagnostic approach.

Diagnostic Procedure Instructions provides an overview of each diagnostic category.

1. Transmission shift control lever will not move from PARK with the brake pedal pressed. 2. Transmission shft control lever will move from PARK without the brake pedal pressed.

Circuit/System Description

Body control module (BCM) controls the automatic transmission's Shift Lock control solenoid by feeding the control solenoid with positive battery voltage when the brake pedal is pressed down. BCM monitors the control circuit's flow of voltage and current.

Circuit/System Verification

1. Ignition ON.

2. Verify the scan tool Brake Transmission Shift Interlock Solenoid Actuator Command parameter while pressing and releasing the brake pedal. The parameter should change from Inactive to Active when the brake pedal is depressed.

3. If the parameter does not change, refer to Stop Lamps Malfunction .

4. If the parameter changes:

5. Verify that the selector lever can be moved from the parking position when the brake pedal is pressed down.

6. If the gear selector lever can not be moved from the parking position when the brake pedal is pressed down, see Test of circuit/system below.

7. If the gear selector lever can be moved from the parking position:

8. Everything is OK.

Circuit/System Testing

1. With the ignition OFF and all vehicle systems OFF, disconnect the cable connection on the S3 gear select lever. It can take up to 2 minutes for all vehicle systems to be deenergized.

2. Test for less than 10Ω between the ground circuit terminal 2 and ground.

3. If the resistance is 10Ω or higher:

3.1. Ignition OFF.

3.2. Test for less than 2Ω in the ground circuit end to end.

3.3. If the resistance is 2Ω or higher, rectify the open/high resistance in the circuit.

3.4. If the value is less than 2Ω, rectify the open/high resistance at the ground connection.

4. If the resistance is less than 10Ω

5. Ignition ON, connect a test lamp between the ground circuit pin 2 and the control circuit pin 4.

6. Activate Brake Transmission Shift Interlock Solenoid Actuator Active and Inactive on the the scan tool. The test lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states.

7. If the lamp is not lit constantly:

7.1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the cable connection on the body's electronic module K9

7.2. Test for infinite resistance between the control circuit and ground.

7.3. If the value is less than infinite resistance, rectify the short circuit to ground.

7.4. If the value is infinite resistance:

7.5. Test for less than 2Ω in the control circuit end to end.

7.6. If the resistance is 2Ω or higher, rectify the open/high resistance in the circuit.

7.7. If the resistance is less than 2Ω

7.8. Ignition ON.

7.9. Verify that a test lamp lights between each B+ and the ignition circuit pin on the control module's connection.

7.10. If the test lamp does not light, rectify the circuit or fuse.

7.11. If the test lamp lights between each B+ and the ignition circuit pin, replace the body's electronic module K9.

8. If the test lamp is constantly lit:

8.1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the connection to K9 body's electronic module.

8.2. Test for less than 1 V between the control circuit and ground.

8.3. If the value is 1V or higher, rectify the circuit's voltage short circuit.

8.4. If the value is lower than 1V, replace K9 body's electronic module.

9. If the test lamp lights and goes out:

10. Test or replace S3 gear select lever.

Component test

Dynamic test

1. Fit a bridge cable fuse-protected with 10A between pin 4 and 12V. Temporarily install a bridge cable between the ground pin 2 and ground.

2. Verify that the solenoid valve switches on/off and emits a click sound, etc.

3. If the solenoid valve does not switch on/off and emit a click sound, etc:

4. Replace S3 gear select lever.

5. If the solenoid valve switches on/off and emits a click sound, etc:

6. Everything is OK.
