1. Power Door Latch Malfunction

2. Door Handle Lock Switch Malfunction

Circuit/System Description

When any exterior door handle is lifted, switched ground signals are sent to the keyless entry control module through the door handle switch signal circuits. If the status of the door lock system is Unlock, the power door latches will electrically release after lifting the exterior door handle. If the status of the door lock system is Lock, one of the following inputs will be required before the latch will release.

A door unlock switch activation

A door key cylinder unlock switch activation

An active keyless entry unlock command

A passive keyless entry unlock command message is received by the keyless entry control module.

Once the enable criteria has been met, the keyless entry control module will supply power and ground to the door latch motor control circuits and the door will release.

Diagnostic Aids

Note

Using the power door unlock switch or manually unlocking the doors does not disable the content theft deterrent arm mode. Also, disconnecting the battery or pulling fuses does not disable the arm mode, since the body control module (BCM) stores the content theft deterrent mode status in memory.

Circuit/System Verification

1. Ignition ON, observe the scan tool keyless entry control module Driver Door Ajar Switch, Passenger Door Ajar Switch, Left Rear Door Ajar Switch and Right Rear Door Ajar Switch parameters while opening and closing the doors. The parameter should change between Active and Inactive.

2. If not the specified value, refer to Door Latch Malfunction.

3. Ignition ON, observe the scan tool keyless entry control module Exterior Driver Door, Exterior Passenger Door, Exterior Left Rear Door and Exterior Right Rear Door Handle Switch parameters while using the appropriate door handle. The parameter should change between Active and Inactive.

4. If not the specified value, refer to Door Latch Malfunction.

5. Observe the scan tool keyless entry control module Exterior Driver Door Handle Proximity Sensor parameter while using the driver door handle. The parameter should change between Active and Inactive.

6. If the value does not change between commanded states, refer to Door Handle Lock Switch Malfunction.

7. Observe the scan tool keyless entry control module Exterior Passenger Door Handle Proximity Sensor parameter while using the passenger door handle. The parameter should change between Active and Inactive.

8. If the value does not change between commanded states, refer to Door Handle Lock Switch Malfunction.

9. Ignition OFF, lock the vehicle and move the vehicle key outside the passive entry antenna receiving range.

10. Command the Driver Door Unlatch and Passenger Door(s) Unlatch with a scan tool, the doors should perform the Unlatch command.

11. If any door latch is inoperative, refer to Door Latch Assembly Test.

Circuit/System Testing

Door Latch Malfunction

2. If not within the specified value, test at the K84 Keyless Entry Control Module the signal circuits terminal 3 X4 and 14 X4 for short to ground, short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal replace the K84 Keyless Entry Control Module.

3. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the malfunctioning door handle switch.

4.
Note

Some control module ground circuits may require up to 20 min to achieve a resistance reading of less than 5 Ω. In most cases the readings will drop below 20 Ω within 1 min indicating the control modules are going to sleep.

Test for less than 10 Ω between the ground circuit terminal 1 and ground.

5. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.

6. Ignition ON, test for greater than 11 V between the signal circuit terminal 2 and ground.

7. If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal replace the K84 Keyless Entry Control Module.

8. Verify the following scan tool parameter is Inactive.

Exterior Driver Door Handle Switch

Exterior Passenger Door Handle Switch

Exterior Left Rear Door Handle Switch

Exterior Right Rear Door Handle Switch

9. If not the specified value, replace the K84 Keyless Entry Control Module.

10. Install a 3 A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal 2 and ground circuit terminal 1. Verify the following scan tool parameter is Active.

Exterior Driver Door Handle Switch

Exterior Passenger Door Handle Switch

Exterior Left Rear Door Handle Switch

Exterior Right Rear Door Handle Switch

11. If not the specified value, replace the K84 Keyless Entry Control Module.

12. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the exterior door handle switch.

Door Handle Lock Switch Malfunction

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the inoperative keyless entry antenna - door handle.

2. Test for less than 5 Ω between the ground circuit terminal 4 and ground.

3. If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.

4. Ignition ON, verify the scan tool Exterior Door Handle Proximity Sensor parameter is Inactive.

5. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal 3 for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal replace the K84 Keyless Entry Control Module.

6. Connect the a 3 A jumper harness between the signal circuit terminal 3 and ground. Verify the scan tool Exterior Door Handle Proximity Sensor parameter is Active.

7. If not the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal 3 for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal replace the K84 Keyless Entry Control Module.

8. If all circuits test normal, replace the inoperative keyless entry antenna - door handle.

Component Testing

Exterior Door Handle Switch Test

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate exterior door handle switch.

2. With the switch in the open position, test for infinite resistance between the signal terminal 2 and the ground terminal 1.

3. If not the specified value, replace the exterior door handle switch.

4. With the switch in the closed position, test for less than 5 Ω between the signal terminal 2 and the ground terminal 1

5. If greater than the specified range, replace the exterior door handle switch.

Door Latch Assembly Test

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the appropriate door latch assembly.

2. Ignition ON, install a 15 A fused jumper wire between the control terminal listed below and B+:

Left hand drive: Driver door latch control terminal 10

Left hand drive: Passenger door latch control terminal 5

Right hand drive: Driver door latch control terminal 5

Right hand drive: Passenger door latch control terminal 10

Left rear door latch control terminal 10

Right rear door latch control terminal 5

3. Momentarily install a jumper wire between the control terminal listed below and ground. The door latch should perform the Unlock function:

Left hand drive: Driver door latch control terminal 5

Left hand drive: Passenger door latch control terminal 10

Right hand drive: Driver door latch control terminal 10

Right hand drive: Passenger door latch control terminal 5

Left rear door latch control terminal 5

Right rear door latch control terminal 10

4. If the function does not perform as specified, replace the door latch.
