Part of front frame member
This description refers to joining the frame member. For replacement of the wheel housing, see
Part of wheel housing,
Part of front wheel housing or
Front wheel housing and front frame member.
Important
The frame member must not be joined further back than is shown in the illustration to be sure of avoiding damage to the reinforcement inside it.
1.
Mount the car on an aligning bench.
2.
Remove the front wing.
3.
Remove the radiator crossmember, see
Part of radiator member.
4.
Realign to the correct measurements if necessary.
5.
Cut away the damaged part of the frame member.
6.
Realign any deformed metalwork.
7.
Cut the new frame member roughly to size.
8.
Fit the spare part in position, using the holes in the frame member to align it. Adjust its position exactly, checking the alignment by means of the aligning bench's coordinate measuring system, and fix it with a few welding clamps.
9.
Cut the existing frame member precisely in line with the rear edge of the spare part.
10.
Remove the spare part and realign any deformed metalwork.
11.
Use a grinder to clean the areas on the spare part and the body that are to be welded.
12.
Position the spare part and fix it with a few welding clamps.
13.
Adjust the position of the spare part exactly, checking its alignment by means of the aligning bench's coordinate measuring system.
14.
Position the wheel housing and the front cross member and fix it with a few welding clamps. Adjust its position exactly, checking the alignment by means of the aligning bench's coordinate measuring system.
15.
Hang the wing, bonnet and radiator member in place and check the alignment of the spare part.
16.
Secure the cross-member and frame member with a couple of tack welds.
17.
Remove the wing, bonnet, wheel housing and radiator cross member. All-weld the joints on the frame member and weld the cross member.
Note
If the wheel housing is fitted:
Cut an opening in the wheel housing and all-weld the internal reinforcement of the frame member. Weld the opening.
18.
Go over the welds with a grinder.
19.
Apply primer to all surfaces that have been ground clean. Use a high-quality primer such as Standox 1K Füllprimer.
20.
Seal joints and metal folds with putty. Use Terostat 1K-PUR, part No. 30 15 426.
21.
Apply underseal to the underbody and in the wheel housing. Use Terostat 9320.
22.
Apply anti-corrosion agent to the frame member after it has been painted. Use Terotex HV 400 or Mercasol 1.
23.
Fit the radiator crossmember and front wing.
