Transfer case, B284

To remove


1. Remove the Propeller shaft .

2. Aut: Drain the fluid through the level pipe.

Man: Drain the gearbox of oil.

3. Remove Subframe, B284, 4WD .


4. Remove Wing liner, front , right (A).

5. Unload the belt tensioner and unhook the belt (B). Use a 1/2" puller handle.


6. Tap the drive shaft out from the intermediate shaft, use a brass drift and mallet (C). Move the drive shaft aside.


Warning

Use protective goggles to protect against flying splinters of metal.


7. Remove the alternator's electrical connections (A).

RHD: Remove Alternator, B284, 4WD, (RHD)


8. Remove the alternator's retaining bolts (B). If necessary, push the engine to the left slightly.

9. Move the alternator out.

10. Remove the rear torque rod bracket (A).


11. Remove the support bracket (B) from the transfer case.


12. Support the transfer case with a column jack, and secure with cable ties.


13. Remove the transfer case (C).


14. Lower and ease out the transfer case.

Important

Be careful that the servo pipe does not get damaged.



To fit


1. Clean the contact surfaces between the transfer case and the gearbox.

2. Raise and align the transfer case in the correct position in relation to the gearbox.

3. Fit the transfer case (A). Tighten the bolts in the correct order as illustrated.

Tightening torque: 110 Nm (81.1 lbf ft).


4. Fit the support bracket between the transfer case and the engine carefully in three steps to avoid breakage.

Tightening torque, bolts (B) step 1: 5 Nm (3.7 lbf ft).


Tightening torque, bolts (C) step 2: 20 Nm (15 lbf ft)


Tightening torque, bolts (B) step 3: 60 Nm (44 lbf ft).


5. Fit the rear torque rod bracket (A).

Tightening torque 80 Nm (59 lbf ft)


6. Move the alternator in.

RHD: Fit Alternator, B284, 4WD, (RHD)

7. Fit the alternator's retaining bolts (B). If necessary, push the engine to the left slightly.

Tightening torque 24 Nm (18 lbf ft)


8. Fit the alternator's electrical connections (A).

9. Fit the right-hand drive shaft.

10. Fit Subframe, B284, 4WD .

11. Fit the Propeller shaft .

12. Fit Wing liner, front , right.

13. Check the oil level as specified in Transfer case, checking/filling oil .

14. For automatic transmission, fill with fluid in accordance with Checking / adjusting the fluid level B284 .

For manual gearbox, fill with oil in accordance with Filling/changing gearbox oil B284 .
