DTC Descriptor

DTC C0161 5A

Antilock Braking System Brake Switch Circuit Not Plausible

Circuit/System Description

When the brake pedal is actuated, the body control module (BCM) sends a serial data message to the electronic brake control module (EBCM) concerning the brake pedal position. The EBCM compares the relationship between brake pedal position and the brake pressure recorded by the brake pressure sensor. This information is used to check the vehicle when electronic stability control takes place.

Conditions for Running the DTC

Ignition ON.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The electronic brake control module (EBCM) detects 4 accelerations from standstill up to a vehicle speed exceeding 40 km/h (26 mph) without any changes in the brake light switch signal.

The electronic brake control module (EBCM) detects the vehicle speed is greater than 20 km/h (13 MPH), the brake pedal is applied for 360 s, and brake pressure is less than 15 bar (218 PSI).

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

A current DTC clears when the diagnostic runs and passes.

The DTC in the history is cleared after 40 consecutive fault-free ignition cycles have taken place.

Action Taken When DTC IS Set

No action taken.

Diagnostic Aids

The DTC C0161 5A can be set if the brake pedal is applied while accelerating or the brake pedal position sensor is out of adjustment.

Circuit/System Verification

Note

Troubleshoot all brake light-related DTCs or symptoms before starting the troubleshooting procedure below.

1. Ignition OFF, verify that the pedal position sensor or the brake pedal is fitted correctly and not caused by detection of residual brake pressure.

2. If a problem is discovered:

Repair or replace the affected component.

3. If there is no problem:

4. Switch ON the ignition, execute Calibration of brake pedal position sensor .

5. Verify that no DTC is generated.

6. If DTC is generated:

Replace K17 electronic brake control module.

7. If DTC is not generated:

8. All OK.

Repair Instructions

Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification after completing the diagnostic procedure.
